- Do action verbs actually change my ATS score?
- Most ATS parsing doesn't score verb choice directly. What it — and every human reviewer after it — responds to is a bullet that reads as evidence instead of description. SteadyCV's own checker specifically flags bullets that don't open with a real action verb, because that's the fastest tell of a description-shaped bullet versus an evidence-shaped one.
- Do I need a different verb for every bullet?
- No. Using "Led" three times across unrelated bullets is fine — the goal is that each bullet opens with a real action verb, not that you never repeat one. Swapping to a thesaurus synonym purely for variety usually makes a bullet read worse, not better.
- What if none of these verbs quite fit what I did?
- Pick the closest one and be specific in the rest of the sentence. The verb sets the frame; what comes after it — what you did, how much, and what changed because of it — is what actually persuades.
- Should I avoid weak verbs like "helped" or "worked on" completely?
- Not completely. Use them when you genuinely played a supporting role and want to say so honestly. The swap table above is for bullets where you understated your own ownership of the work — not a license to rewrite every sentence to sound more senior than the work actually was.
